Consumer Alert: Fraudulent motor insurance policies in Ireland

02 Feb 2024

Lloyd’s and Lloyd’s Insurance Company S.A (trading as “Lloyd’s Europe”) have become aware of fraudulent Irish Motor Insurance certificates in circulation which erroneously state the insurance is underwritten at “Lloyd’s of London”.  In some cases the certificates feature the Lloyd’s logo and refer to Lloyd’s market participants and other parties, who may in the past have legitimately offered motor insurance policies on behalf of Lloyd’s underwriters.  In particular, certificates may incorrectly include references to “Tokio Marine”. These certificates have not been issued by Lloyd’s underwriters and do not relate to valid insurance policies.

We are aware that these fraudulent certificates are in many cases produced to a high standard and may include apparent security features such as foil security strips/lines and holograms. Notwithstanding, if your insurance certificate refers to Lloyd’s of London and you have paid for your insurance in cash or have been provided with a paper certificate of insurance or other paper policy documentation (rather than being sent your insurance documentation electronically), you should takes steps to check your insurance coverage. Please note that Lloyd’s underwriters and Lloyd’s Europe do not currently issue physical documentation relating to insurance cover via cash in hand monetary transfer.

As a result of the above consumers should be aware that there are certificates in circulation that are invalid. Those affected should consider taking action to obtain valid coverage, if required, as soon as possible.

If you believe you have been issued with fraudulent policy documentation and wish to confirm whether you have cover at Lloyd’s, you can contact Lloyd’s Ireland by emailing or calling:

You should also report it to the local Garda Station in Ireland.

Should you have any further questions please contact Lloyd’s, in writing, via the following e-mail address:
